How about basing it on weapon type and group formation.
If you have a group of 5 and are in a formation of three
in front and two in back then only those with longer weapons
like poles and spears would be effective, but would be
protected for the most part unless the enemy had poles or spears.
Also look at encircling and overwhelming an opponent with
numbers. Those directly in front could be hit, but those in
back get free attacks. Of course, feint would be worthless
from the back, but trip and kick might be fun. Then you could
throw in a skill called whirl about really really fast so the
encircled victim could flail about wildly hopefully hitting those
close enough. Go for things like shield wall formation and those
in front immediately drop into a shield wall at the first sign of
battle. They can't flee and their number of attacks are halved, but
their defense is incredible unless of course they get tied up with
the mob or player and are left open to shots from off to the side.
Either that or a polearm is used to pull down their shield and continuing
the motion the tip is shoved through the shieldman. You know things
like that might be fun. Huge melees of 10 a side knocking each other
silly.
Overall hmm I think the current system works just fine.....
