My recent conjurers (Ahzesh and Peroleth) both heroed without mastering a single spell (except magic missile and later, clairvoyance). Literally. The extent of my dedicated skills practice was doing parry and shield block at level 15 or so. Peroleth had word at 76% at hero. Sure, it's theoretically unwise, but that was part of the appeal for conjurers of me... after playing an invoker and a string of warriors, the premise of power without practice was very, very appealing.
