All powers are potentially annoying. If they couldn't kill/hinder someone or prevent the same what good would they be? The only combination of character where I would really say you have to be ultraconscious of nightgaunts is a rager warrior -- coincidentally (or is it?) one of the types of characters best set up to just step up and beat the crap out of the gaunt. Sure, sometimes it can catch you at a bad moment, but that's ultimately your fault. The only possible statement I can see you making is that you don't like the idea that, yes, you have to watch your back and danger can come in many ways at any time -- in which case, no offense, but are you ever playing the wrong game.

Other than once in a two-day period when a bug in spellcraft was massively increasing the kill rate of PWK, I've never been killed by a player using that spell. Rot has never even come close. Have you considered that you may be allowing your enemies way too many opportunities to exercise these?
