From the best I know, duels in ye olde wild west are mostly Hollywood. Yes there were the high noon shoot-outs...but most of the time that was between a locally appointed sheriff, a marshall, or some other law official and whoever the current hothead was. Also the American west was notorious as a place where law was generally whoever had the best aim...or the most money.
In more 'civilized' places where duels were fought with rapiers, or 50 paces apart with pistols...between gentlemen, and nobility. There are many cases of people being arrested after a death caused to the other party...or at least run out of town. Also duels were eventually outlawed...go figure.
The more I post this the more I realise that this doesn't really have anything to do with Imbrogno's post...but is more a counter arguement to people claiming the pks in Galadon are similair to duels...in most cases I'd say it's more comparable to a back alley mugging....which well, that's what the Arbiters are there for, not to stop it...but to deal with it when it happens, and hopefully quell the instances.
