Elves and drow

I am curious to the reason people play elves and drow. To me, the benefits just do do enough to override the penalties when compared to the experience penalty. The main thing I would be able to see would be the role play opportunities (I have to admit I really do like drow in this aspect and have used them from time to time)or the added challenge. As I said I have used drow from time to time, but have generally gotten my ass handed to me quickly. From a mechanical aspect the arial seems a better choice for the same advantages, but they just dont have the same flavor. Is it possible 500 exp is too steep for these races or am i missing something.
