... only matter before hero, for the most part. If I'm playing a race/class combo with a monster XP penalty (wood elf bard?), I don't make a big effort to PK until I've reached that point. I'll fight if it's in my role to do so, but I don't run around actively hunting if I don't need to be. Once you are a hero, you get the small side benefit of having a smaller range. As an example, heroed wood-elf bards are above the range of human, half-elf, and arial Spectres. This makes it a little easier to avoid getting ganged, but it also means less easy meat in the low 40's, if you're into that. And of course, you get a few bells and whistles like autosneak, the and the best INT in the game. Sure makes practicing a lot less boring. So while you might have to spend more time ranking, you'll make the hours up there. While you'll fare worse than average against warrior types (less hp, vuln_iron), your big brain and resists will help considerably against mages, clerics, and bards. I can see why it's a less common choice, however. > I am curious to the reason people play elves and drow. To me, the benefits just do do enough to override the penalties when compared to the experience penalty. The main thing I would be able to see would be the role play opportunities (I have to admit I really do like drow in this aspect and have used them from time to time)or the added challenge. As I said I have used drow from time to time, but have generally gotten my ass handed to me quickly. From a mechanical aspect the arial seems a better choice for the same advantages, but they just dont have the same flavor. Is it possible 500 exp is too steep for these races or am i missing something.
