Everyone says 'say no to empowerment classes', but it didn't sound like you were new to mudding/roleplaying, just to CF specficially. Get some basic knowledge starting in with a non-empowerment class (I'll agree with assassins here, I think), but once you gain a base set of skills (how to walk to Udgaard, where to go for basic ranking, etc) and learn a bit about the storyline and roles behind the religions and cabals (in other words, read helpfiles, and interact a bit with other players) I might recomend your first serious character as a healer. Think out an indepth role, a description, etc, then go out and get empowered. For exploring and learning, it covers nearly every aspect, and challenges you to learn the system well enough to get empowered. Gate, teleport, word, refresh, coupled with cures for nearly every malediction, sanc, protective shield and fly - will allow you to remain alive in many situations, and let you explore Thera up and down. The only thing to watch out for is gate, which can be a very good skill to explore with, but its easy to become dependant on not having to walk anywhere. And as I'm sure many of you are aware, being able to avoid PKs can go a long way to lowering your frustration with learning a new world.
