You both neglected to mention pathfinding, which (for me at least) is the skill that makes a low level ranger both dangerous as hell and nearly impossible to kill in the right hands. All other low-level movement solutions are a very poor man's pathfinding at best. Damn nice for exploration too, in a new-to-CF-how-the-hell-do-I-walk-from-Point-A-to-Point-B sort of way, too.

I disagree. A thief is a relatively terrible fighter in most people's hands for the first half of levels (give or take), especially against mobs. I levelled an assassin to 35 once without grouping -- you'd have to be a lot crazier than me to try that with a thief. Plus assassins just have a lot of all-around useful stuff that's good for newbies, IMHO. Doesn't bother me now at all that thieves can't see invis without help, but it sure (lacking detects) got my ass beat as a newbie.

I dunno. . . without the tiny bit of game knowledge it takes to deal with your total lack of detects or any way to hide, you're going to be preyed upon by a lot of people and find yourself trying to re-equip without really knowing where anything is. I don't think a warrior is as good of an idea.

> definetly hold off on empowerment for a long while. trannies while easy to learn the ropes with, are extremelly weak - dont expect to go exploring with them by yourself for quite some time, and you will always flee (teleport/word) from fights if your smart (98% of the time)

Okay, now that's just not true.

> dont play dawn. You will be asked alot of questions regarding thera, alot of the time.
> If you want to explore etc, this will get in the way (dawnies always have to help people.. and they get nasty people using that to kill them). Good thing about being good... you can trust your groupmates (mostly). Bad thing about being good, empire/scarabs hunt you... neutral is probably the safer bet (neutral/neutral so guards wont beat on you).. as neutral.. try and group with good people.

I don't think Dawn's a half bad idea. Personally, whenever I an aggressive evil type, anyone who isn't me had better watch their backs. . .not just the goods. At least when you're Dawn you have a support group.

So, for the record, I suggest human/felar ranger or human/arial/felar assassin for those playing CF for the first time. YMMV.
