> If you're new to CF, I'd go with: (no particular order) Everyone has opinions etc, just thought Id give mine on this (just to point out some bad things about some of the picks here)that and Im bored > 1) Ranger. Camouflage, good (outdoor) fighting abilities, healing skills. Lots of ways to stay out of trouble. also, it'll make you want to get out of the cities, which will make you explore a bit more. as a newbie you start in a city... you meet people in cities... you will learn alot from the people you meet there. If you want to explore alone, then a ranger is good.. but hes at a huge disadvantage in no wooded areas. Not the first pick for a newbie I wouldnt have thought. > 2) Assassin. Good all-around fighter, lots of options in a fight. Can hide/vanish/etc to escape from danger. assassins do indeed make good allrounders. > 3) Defensively oriented warrior. Arial swords specs, felar staff specs, human polearm specs are all good. no argument... beware of the race vulnerabilites for both arial and felar.. they are easy to exploit. > All three classes will find it easy to find groupmates, avoid PK attempts, and tank mobs. If you get an urge to play a mage, transmuters are probably the easiest to learn the ropes with. Hold off on empowered classes until you get used to Theran roleplaying. definetly hold off on empowerment for a long while. trannies while easy to learn the ropes with, are extremelly weak - dont expect to go exploring with them by yourself for quite some time, and you will always flee (teleport/word) from fights if your smart (98% of the time) dont play dawn. You will be asked alot of questions regarding thera, alot of the time. amen... if you find someone who is roleplaying learn from them.. it lifts your character and makes it much more enjoyable > For more hints, check the official page, and Gabe/Snarf's "tips" page. Both are linked via the Forum's sidebar. > > what character would you suggest (race/class) for someone who needs to learn the layout of CF's Thera. I came from DM *hiss* if that is any indicator of my area knowledge > > -no empowerment classes > > -no big exp penalties > > any suggestions?
exp penalty is a pain, and you may find yourself as a newbie overwhelemed with the number of skills to practice (very useful kicks requiring lots of practice in the previous kick etc).... thieves have less exp penalty, and are easier to immediately pick up and play.
> Other tips: Play a good-aligned character. Your companions will be more trustworthy, helpful, and willing to risk themselves for you. I'd either stay uncaballed, or shoot for Dawn, as cabal politics can get you killed a lot.
If you want to explore etc, this will get in the way (dawnies always have to help people.. and they get nasty people using that to kill them). Good thing about being good... you can trust your groupmates (mostly). Bad thing about being good, empire/scarabs hunt you... neutral is probably the safer bet (neutral/neutral so guards wont beat on you).. as neutral.. try and group with good people.
