I played a svirf conjurer a couple months back, and managed to force myself to level up to about 30. I probably would have stuck with it, but it got terribly, terribly boring in that span between getting angel/demon and archon/devil. Btw, if memory serves me correctly, svirfs also get magic resistance similiar to dwarves. A pretty big advantage, if you can augment it with alot of -spell and +hp gear. My mana gain per level was pretty respectable too, usually about 14-15, which is roughly the same as a human necro.
Even though I didn't go master (or any cabal, but had plans for troupe), I found life was surprisingly easier than I expected.
My hp was comparable to a warrior of my level, with the good con and ability to gain convert to hp 4 or 5 times every 10 levels, and PK's really didn't present much of a problem.
The only real challenge I had was against a certain rager assassin, but with my shadowcat as a familiar, nobody ever managed to sneak up on me unexpectedly.
If I had to do it all over again, I probably would have been a master instead, uncaballed mages can get mighty boring unless you are focusing exclusively on the PK aspect, which I was trying to avoid.
