I agree 100% with that sentiment. Make a character designed to try to get a special thing and you take your chances.

Since someone who wishes to remain anonymous (I suspect one of Hifflio's friends, since I generally want to think better of that particular player than to believe he would go to this particular level) brings Hifflio up: I've never seen a character more designed to try to get a quest form. No, I'm not forgetting about the one-armed mage, either. That's not to say it's not a neat character at all -- but if you design a character to try to get a very specific kind of form that doesn't currently exist you're taking your chances. It may take you a ridiculously long time to get your form, if you ever do. Especially given the fact that the person who wrote (and therefore understands best) almost all of the non-commented shapeshifting code (and thus, for whom adding a new form would be a ten minute task and not something you have to actually block off real time for) is no longer around.

In much the same way that people who can't afford to lose money shouldn't gamble, players who don't feel they can afford to not get whatever special thing they have their heart set on shouldn't make a character for it.

For the record, I don't think Hifflio is silly or a bad idea at all. Now, strings of elf warriors made around the idea of getting a skill that doesn't exist -- that's silly.
