In the majority of cases, I think the answer you seek is really quite simple -- balance. I, for one, have played characters on both sides of this: those who are "pure" roleplaying characters, and those who are more disposed to Playerkilling.

However, I can tell you that those I have enjoyed the most are those which are a balance of the two approches.

Obviously, those Trouper and Trouper-like characters enjoy the roleplaying aspect. But I suspect that some of them, even if they are not avid PK'ers, like having that aspect of the game, and that 'fear factor' being present in their character's mentality.

While I think that roleplaying is the backbone of the game -- even if it wasn't five years ago, it is now -- I do believe strongly that PK'ing adds a great deal to CarrionFields, *IF* it is done with purpose, and with a character in mind.

It's a lot more satisfying, that way, win or lose.
