I don't think you can rank with any pets and have no experience penalty, but about grouping I can say this....

Versatility.
You can heal your groupmates, and play healer.
You can play invoker. Sunray, thorn, fire seeds, etc - with the right moon/herbs of course.
Druids also can do decent damage with the right gear/etc.

Also remember, not all pets, do just damage. *HINT*
