I don't really see that mentioning how important is 'role' for roleplaying - and I'll agree that it doesn't really mean anything when going for cabal membership, BUT I have seen it mentioned several times that characters without a role of any sorts will have a much harder time getting themselves tattooed.
I'm afraid that, while what you said made sense about becoming a better roleplayer, you're arguing a moot point.
