Well, I expected more answers, but nevertheless its
3:0 in favor of revealing the secret... Here it is.

You don't have to have any forms to cast shapeshift.
On rank 31 or 32 you can go to any place you want that
is not crowded by ragers, cast slow on yourself,
and do the following:

cast 'shapeshift' nothing
or, as an option,
cast 'shapeshift' scarabaeus

as in this context they should produce the same result.
the spell is still cast, so you can improve it
(if it was not changed recently, in last 6 months or so).

And, you have the following bonuses:

1. You can stay slowed permanently
2. You don't have to revert

I never played a transmuter higher than level 4,
but I know at least two people (I'm RL aquainted
with them) who used that method and were pretty
much satisfied with it.
