Um... no, I'm sorry but that is completely wrong. Without giving away the specific numbers of how it works, each point of -save gives you a percentage chance to either completely ignore a magical attack (such as sleep, blindness, etc), or to take half damage (all damage spells).

so, having -30 spells might give you like a 50% chance to resist or ignore damage from a spellcaster of your same rank. You will gain a penalty from casters who are higher level than yourself.

Of course, that 50% is just made up, and not the true value, but it illustrates that -save gear is not just like AC. The exact numbers aren't important, just know that if you want to take on spellcasters, -save gear is crucial.

P.S. I might add, that AC does not subtract from damage either. I don't know where that came from. The only way to subtract from damage is to employ one of the multitude of resisting spells/wands/objects/skills.
