Further just to clarify a few things... 80% of those who become anthema by the immortals have a history that contains several stupid/unimperial things that they have done in the past. This may or may not include the amount you have donated and how many kills you've managed. So you see in a log what appears to be someone making a small mistake and getting anathematized for it. In reality you just witnessed the straw that broke the camel's back. Another 15% are people who's single action is such an egregious violation that there is immediate punishment. Examples, attacking an oathed, attacking in town (when you shouldn't,) disobeying a directive, disrespecting an immortal, attacking a citizen, etc. Then there is a 5% who are made examples of. They do something public that sets a bad example, and so they are cast out. Or a new factor is being played into the mix (greater enforcement of intersect play, no elf-bard quests allowed for Imperials, not using the CB unless it is Imperial Business) and you are unfortunate enough not to have heard through word-of-mouth and so you get anathed for something that recently wasn't so illegal. This part is what I would see as the "risk of being in Empire." Its really the only time, in my mind, that people get screwed without deserving it. But that is part of getting caught up in the mechinations of an Empire. I can guarentee you that no Immortal wants the Empire to suck. What has evolved over the past 6-8 months is a change in Empire from "gangbangers anonymous" to a role-playing cabal. You now have to "talk the talk" if you want to "walk the walk." You need to roleplay why you gang-bang. Roleplay, why you cross sect lines and aid each other. If someone asks you for something, secure payment. If it was an emergency and you needed to act before talking, demand payment afterwards. Hint: If you're in a group, you can generally get away with helping each other as long as there is some level of communication/roleplay involved. Hint: If you're not grouped and not in a sect, don't aid without roleplay, even during raids. Make the comment "This is granted to you only to thwart our common enemy." when you sanc or hast someone. Or "I will take the blows, but you all must aid it killing X quickly." ROLEPLAY and it will all be fine.
Good advice:
> So basically, your fears aren't totally unfounded. Just stay off cb unless you really need to. Never mention any weakness or inability on your part. This means either you have to be the ultimate bad ass and never have a weakness, learn to keep real quiet, or learn to lie very well. All are acceptable alternatives in the Empire.
