And if you think about it, the low levels spells could draw on the mages own personal energies, like a training athlete. You run, you get tired. You cast invis, you feel tired mentally. I think the martial artist example is the best I have heard in this whole argument. Focus and concentration are improved by the simple spells. After all, almost every martial art school has a front kick. It's easy but it builds muscles, increases limberness, and begins helping you learn balance. It is highly unlikely that you are going to fall on your ass practicing this kick but if you did, it wouldn't hurt all that bad.
