Honestly I didn't like this solution either. But without giving them weapon specs, spells, etc. It is simply hard to compete at the Hero level.
Perhaps a better form of dodging, and a way to improve their saving throws or something?

I'm curious why you think assassins should have pick locks? If I was forced to give pick locks to another class other then thieves it would be bards. They are supposed to be the "explorers" anyway. (And late nights of drinking and misplacing keys calls for skills like lock-pick...)
Assassins are killers, pure and simple. Even if their prey hides behind a locked door, they theoretically have the means to hide and wait until they enter a more favorable position to strike.

> That would make your thief an assassin. Really, a thief doesn't want to KILL anyone (speaking generally) he only cares enough that he does not get caught stealing.

Well, all poison really does is cause the annoying strength loss. It's not like you have to make a saving throw or die... (But yes in close fights it can make the difference damage wise.)
Almost every other class has some form to weaken their opponent. evenom seems natural for thieves.

Hmm, interesting you feel that way. I don't mean to say that thieves can do so much damage with it that it is an auto-kill like assassinate... But I've come to fear getting dual backstabbed... Especially if the thief can get a trip in there somehow and starts cheap shoting you.

> > 8) give thieves enhanced damage earlier in life.

> Maybe.

Another person suggested that thieves should loose enhanced damage all together and then maintain dual backstab. I'm all for toning thieves teeth down and turning up the stealth but that can only go so far. I think if we totally took enhanced away from thieves they would start to get very boring. You couldn't kill anything, including creatures you meet exploring...

> Ok. Not bad... but I don't know. It's hard to be EXTRA hidden in a shadow.

Assassins hide from "non-rogues" to hunt them. Thieves should be the masters of stealth. > >

11) give thieves "dark vision", like rangers but forbid them to hide and sneak if they are wearing glowing equipment...

> I like the part about not being able to hide if they are wearing anything glowing. Perhaps thieves could get 'enhanced hide' (can only be seen by thieves of the same or higher rank) that only works when your not glowing.
