There's several factually wrong bits in your post, which serves to undermine your point (which may have validity): You are confusing ritual of abominations and ritual of cannibalia. At least two liches have had the latter and not been immortals. It is simply not true that only immortals can complete the lich quests. A lot of non-immortals have completed lich quests. Istendil and Golmagus are two out of many more than two. Not to brag or anything, but I've yet to hear a lich quest that I didn't know 3 (or 4) of the 4 items for. And that's just off the top of my head. Granted, there's so many new areas now that I'd probably be seriously stumped by one issued today, but that's a product of my not having played seriously in months. I'm not going to start listing phylactery effects, but suffice it to say that there's one phylactery in particular that I believe is seriously unbalanced, and magnifies the snowball effect that is entailed in general phylactery-gathering hundredfold. One other phylactery is also flawed in its design, and I don't understand what the imms were thinking when they added it (it wasn't one of the initial ones implemented). As it stands now, to be killed, Zorszaul has to be lagged out for the entirety of the fight, such that he cannot get a single command through (as Istendil was). If liches couldn't be earthbound back when Istendil fought the Empire, he'd have lived, no question about it. I can put together in my head a group of reasonable size that could kill Zorszaul under the right conditions, and assuming that they made no mistakes (and assuming they had a little bit of luck). Zorszaul's at least as clever a player as I am, and he knows his own abilities better than I do, and I'm sure he has a (very short) list of situations jotted down somewhere, on paper or in his head, in which he could die. He won't walk into those situations. I think liches should be toned down slightly, personally, but I know some imms disagree and have designed them to be overpowered.
