Having played both, I prefer the Fire Shaman.

BUT, the difference between a drow and fire giant are not fire_resist cold_vuln mental_vuln low int high str vs
mithril_vuln autosneak low con.

The difference is a between a large strong badass giant who follows a god with such faith that he can draw on his power and a lithe, graceful, deathful elf who knows his god's wishes and makes them his own.
Decide on a role, then see which race fits with your mental picture.
