I agree about the alignment thing, and the class thing. Your alignment case is a good point. But also, if a certain rager has never met a certain mage before, how does he know he's a mage? As an example, the Wheel of Time Series...Aes Sedai take off their rings and POOF! Everone thinks they're regular women (if not a bit prettier...but have you noticed how every woman in his books is beautiful? But I digress.)

But in most cases I think changing the way it is would do more harm than good. Tough to find a group to join when you have no idea who's who. I think of it like this:there's plenty of "people" in Thera, not just the PC's--shopkeepers, healers, innkeepers, etc. Everyone knows about everyone because they've heard rumors and stories about everyone. Maybe all they've heard while talking with the Butcher was "Oh I seen XXXX. He showed up in that dark temple in Southern Galadon just yesterday. Don't like going there myself, but I had a delivery to make...blah blah blah." So there you go. Perfectly good role-play reason everyone suspects you're evil.
