The reason I would usually start with caltraps is because I found over time that the dexterity loss from caltraps would allow me to be more effective with kotegaeshi/kansetsuwaza. Probably just cooincedence though. :-) Caltraps/Kotegaeshi as my 1st/2nd attacks always, sometimes interchanged, especially against mace/axe specs.
