As has been stated happy/unhappy was not the correct terms to be used for morale, they give a totally wrong idea as to what was going on.

Basically morale is a non numerical adjective for your hp/mana/mvs and general wellbeing. A starving man suffering the debilitating effects of poison is not as capable as a man at his peak.
Nepenthe has already said "Great you survived the lich, your happy your alive life is wonderful...you just need to spend the next 3 days sleeping off your injuries and generally not the same man as you are eating your cornflakes."
