*** LOGO CONTEST! ***
*********************

Our current logo has served us well for four years, but it's getting a
bit long in the tooth and quite frankly, we could use a face-lift. That's
why we're turning to you (the collective you, as well as the specific you
that's reading this) for assistance. In order to find a new logo that
properly represent Carrion Fields, we hereby announce... a Logo Contest!
Your task, should you choose to accept it, is simple; design some sort of
graphic that we can use as our new logo. (In case you're wondering what
our old logo is, it's the words "Carrion Fields" in that particular font
with that quartered-circle for the O. The fact that you have even have to
ask shows how much we need a new one.) This new logo can be anything; new
font, new picture, or combination of both. This logo will be used in any
upcoming advertising that we do, as well as being featured on planned
Carrion Fields merchandise. Keep that in mind when you're working; hugely
ornate pictures may look great on a computer screen, but might become a
mess when we try and put it on a t-shirt.

Contest Rules
-------------
1) The contest is open to anyone, player or non-player, mortal or immortal.
The only people not eligible to enter are the judges.
2) There is no limit on the number of entries per person; people are free
to submit more than one logo.
3) All entries should be rendered electronically and submitted in .gif or
.jpg format.
4) Contest submissions should be e-mailed to logo-contest@carrionfields.com.
Any entries sent to addresses other than this will not be registered.
5) Entries should not contain any markings that would reveal the artist's
identity. E-mail addresses will be stripped before the submissions are
judged. (This is done to minimize any personal biases, pro OR con.)
6) Any submission that is found to have been released to the general public
prior to the announcement of winners by the judges will automatically
be disqualified.
7) All entries are to be submitted by no later than midnight on Monday
January 31th, 2001.

Contest Prizes
--------------
Prizes for this contest will be:
1st place $20 certificate for winner's favorite on-line store
2nd place $15 certificate for winner's favorite on-line store
3rd place $10 certificate for winner's favorite on-line store
These will be given out to the top three entries (assuming that we *get*
three entries), regardless of whether or not that logo is ever used by CF.
If one of the submissions *is* chosen to be the new official logo of
Carrion Fields, that submission will be declared the Grand Prize winner.
The Grand Prize consists of:
1) An additional $30 gift certificate from an on-line store
2) The very first T-shirt from the very first print run of CF T-shirts
to bear the new official logo.

Judging
-------
The judges for the logo contest will be: BoltThrower, Jullias, Nepenthe,
Poetry, Eryndorial, and Stellyx.

Entries will be evaluated on the following criteria:
1) Creativity and originality
2) Aesthetics
3) Appropriateness to Carrion Fields MUD
4) Potential for use in electronic advertising
5) Potential for use on CF merchandise
6) Scalability (i.e. does it look as good when shrunk down and enlarged?)

Items #4 and #5 are somewhat at odds with one another. That which looks
very good on a web-page (e.g. animation, realistic shading, eye-catching
detail) may not look very good, or even be possible to reproduce, on a mug,
t-shirt, or keychain. Choice of colors is a particularly important issue:
it is financially unrealistic to try and produce low-quantity runs of items
with more than a few colors. To deal with these conflicting criteria, the
artist may, should he or she choose, submit multiple copies of their logo
submisison for viewing at different sizes or with different color schemes.
THIS IS NOT A REQUIREMENT.

Prize winners will be announced on or before February 7th, 2001. The judges
reserve the right not to award a Grand Prize if no entries are found to be
suitable for use as an official logo. The decision of the judges is final.

Disclaimer/Legalese
-------------------
By entering the Contest, the submitter grants Carrion Fields the royalty-
free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sub-licensable right
and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create
derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such submissions (in
whole or in part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any
form, media, or technology now known or later developed.

(I think that oughta cover it. :-)

In closing... if you're feeling like there's no way you could do anything good
enough to enter, consider this snippet of information. Our current logo was
created by Jullias in 1996, and while he's a hugely talented individual, he
will tell you himself that he's no graphic artist. He took a graphics tool
and played around with an existing font until he had something he liked, then
worked another half-hour or so to get the funky-looking "O". Pretty good for
a guy who can't draw a straight line. If he can do it, so can you!
