My primary point was that there is always going to be 3 paths that appeal more to the number crunchers...if for no other reason than there is more of type 1 damage so I want type 1 shield. Hence using the water 'muter form analogy.
It wasn't really an arguement against it, it was just a passing comment of how I don't see some things changing regardless of what we do with the class. I can already forsee, should this change happen, this conversation happening (since one of the complaints is that groups tend to ignore invokers without all 6 shields):

You tell Warrior 'Hail, noble blade! Care to journey with me a while?'

Warrior tells you 'Which paths are you trained in'

You tell Warrior 'I've learned the arts of earth, air and water quite well'

Warrior tells you 'You don't know Ice or Fire? We'll find someone else'

It may not happen that way, but hopefully you see the point I was making....and that it takes more than just changing the class to get the results needed.
