trees surround the path, offering little hope of shelter, and alot of

A desolate crossroads
The black woodlands are very thick here, with snow & ice covering everything.
The icy winds howl mercilessly, certain to bring a frigid death to any person
foolish enough to travel without thick, warm clothing. Off to the east, the
woodlands give way to a light trail. To the south you may enter deeper into
the frigid wasteland, sticking to the safety of the guarded trail. To the west
you notice a huge, stone watchtower standing as a beacon of warmth to your cold
bones. Perhaps you should step inside to warm up before continuing on your
journey.

Far off to the southwest you see the ruins of what was once the city of Mahn-

covered in about 10 feet of solid ice and snow, making exploration of them
impossible.

You are traveling through woods that are as dark as night. The trees above
block all light and wind. The air is stagnant and smells of death and decay.
The lack of sounds and other signs of life make your skin crawl and you feel

You are high up in the mountains and the bone-chilling cold only reminds you
of the fact, as if the shortness of breath you're experiencing wasn't

that will allow you to go there, but the mountains slope down to your south

The howling, biting wind tears at your clothing and whips shards of ice and

you of warmth and whispers promises of a slow death and a grave unmarked save
by the stark grey stone and blinding snow. Desperately searching the
surroundings for some sign of life or haven from this hostile mountaintop, you
can see no more than a few paces ahead but you think you can discern a narrow
ridgeline continuing to the south. On either side of you the mountain drops
suddenly but whatever might lie at the bottom of that drop is lost in the
swirling ice and snow. Looking back to the west, you notice the brambles and
thorns that fill the narrow crevice have closed up once more, forming an
impenetrable wall. The only choice left to you is the precipitous ridge ahead.

A narrow ridge high in the mountains
Towering mountains rise to the north and far to the south, encircling a
deep, narrow valley. The brisk wind tugs at your cloak but no longer threatens
to push you from your precarious position upon the ridge. The monotonous dark
grey of the mountain rock is unbroken by bush or leaf. Though the snow falls
only in fitful spurts here, the soil is too rocky and the air too thin to
support life. Glancing to the north you see only ever-rising mountains,
colder and less welcoming than even your present spot. Looking down to the
south, the rock drops sharply forming a steep cliff and at the bottom you think

The mountain ridge drops off in a steep cliff to the east and winds its
careful way back along the mountain to the north. A fitful breeze brings you
the dark, thick air of the forest that carpets the valley floor, yet carries no
sound of life. Treetops of dark emerald peek above a heavy blanket of fog that
obscures most of the valley from view. Narrowing your eyes, you spy a peculiar
formation of solid mountain rock, spiraling from the center of the valley floor
and disappearing into the cloud cover that hangs suspended over the entire
valley. With rocky walls of dark grey to the south and west, your only choice
seems to be to face the ice and wind of the mountain ridge or to chance the
dangers of the steep fall.

Silence covers both hills and valley and the only sound that reaches your
ears is the steady beat of your own heart. No rustling of wild animals or the
swift flapping of a bird's wing issues from the valley, no echo of falling rock
comes from the rising mountains. The faintest, sickliest of breezes floats to
you from high above the mountains but fails to disperse the dense grey fog
