I'm not convinced you are right.:

WARNING: The following is largely speculative.

Now granted, it's tough to know the real answer without seeing the code, but....

the people who survived my fiends fought it like they would fight any mob- go for damage, the few malediction-type things that work (boneshatter? not sure), and reducing the number and severity of the hits you take from the mental assault. I've seen (well-played) fire giants survive it, and I killed a few people with INTs in the 23-24 range.

Don't get me wrong- had I ever been fiended as Ingvar, my course of action would have been:

1) Teleport/word to get the hell away from an angry bard. Fighting a fiend while being tripped/fire-n-iced/roundhoused is not so fun.
2) Set wimpy to zero. Fleeing isn't a good plan except for quick quaffs and spell resets.
3) Use a handy resist_mental item I carried several of. (Also nice against a few other classes... this would require my only flee if I was thinking straight and had a full backpack of stuff.)
4) Aura/shield myself, and stone skin if I had the less convenient item that didn't run the risk of holding me and could be done without leaving combat.
5) Kick myself for ever getting fiended. If you've played a bard, you've met several people that know why cold be sleep is inferior to necro sleep in many ways.
5b) Kick myself again, because Ingvar was very well suited for fighting bards.
6) Fight like I'd fight any mob. The fight should have progressed for some time by now, since I'd have spent several rounds brandishing/etc. I'd have a good idea whether or not I would win the fight, or whether I should recall so my corpse is at my own pit.

I think you see "scratches". But I'm not convinced that it accurately reflects what the fiend is feeling. (It might be just damage reduction so all hits land for 1hp. But it might not. I can't tell without seeing the code, or testing several fiends on a willing buddy.)

If you have more definite information one way or the other, feel free to outline it. But the more I read posts about Mr. Fiend, the more I think the prevailing theories don't fit my experiences.
