I meant in general. If you don't get the first hit it likely means you aren't prepared and if you aren't prepared you're chances of dying sky rocket. On the other hand, the person that got the first strike on you probably is prepared and thus his chances of success are inversely proportionate to your chances of failure.

So in all instances, whether you're an assassin or a magicless transmuter, if you don't get the first strike it's better to live and fight a better day than try your luck.
