Taking out the shifter wasnt the brigthest thing you could do, the shifter had merely no ways of harming you, well he is a master, and knows two forms, but your primary concern had to be either the thief, or the conjurer. When the conjurer have these ranks upon you, you can count on that the servitors following is quite strong. The thief would also bring great pain to you alone, with a few well placed circle stabs if you fought one of the mages, or with blackjack/backstab.

1. The muter cant do anything to harm him...heard of halt person?..leaving a transmuter at the side of a fight without spellbane or very good save vs spell will usually get you killed if the transmuter know what he is doing.

2. If he would have attacked the thief, it would have been a long fight as the theif is a good tank. And he could not possibly win a long fight agains that group.

Even the conjurer would have taken longer time as he atleast can shield block too...

The thing he did(I think atleast that as his idea) was attacking the transmuter, hoping to do enough damage fast enough to kill him, and then getting out of there.
