Well... look at thieves: they get backstab as compared to ambush, and what do they get to do in combat? kick, until rank 23, when they can trip for cheapshot (if they're opponent's not flying) enhanced damage doesn't come until 25, same with dual wield, etc. they get hide, which not only can an entire race see (duergar) but also assassins. You complain about the lag on camo, but (and i may be remembering this wrong) the lag really isn't all that bad once you perfect it. No, rangers are not going to be uber-killers at the lower ranks, like giant warriors.. but maybe the imms made it this way for a reason?
