My beef on rangers:

Rangers don't have enough to be worth playing.

Let's go over their entire skill/spell list, shall we?

Spells:

Armor, rank 8.
Hell, why do you have this? Some wizard one day decide
to tell a ranger how to cast it, when you have a better
one later (bark skin), as if AC mattered at all.

Call lightning, rank 17
Ok, not a bad spell. But come on, that is some weak
damage for a spell you can only use on bad weather,
every 4/5 hours. Plus, you now pop out of camo when
you use it.

Control Weather, rank 19
read above

Entangle, rank 20
Ok, now here is a spell that finally has some use.
The loss of dexterity is nice, besides a weak
damage. Least it's a one rounder or it'd suck.

Imbue staff, rank 30.
God save. Hell, rangers are probably the best re-
equippers in the game with this. a +12/+12 staff
that heals.

Skills:

Butcher and Find water:
Nice source of water and food, espcecially butcher
for pking. If you butcher it quickly enough, most
people are spamming get all corpse, and not get all.

Camo:
This is probably the only thing worth the experience
penalty, short of snare and wilderness familiarity.
A god save, too bad it has a lag on it (the only
hiding technique that does, mind you).

Ambush and Waylay:
Well, this is all a ranger has got for a fight.
Flee and ambush if a ranger's next best friend,
because well, what else is he going to do?

Dirt, Disarm, Pugil:
The only thing worth using in combat up to rank
30, which trust me, aien't all that.

Backrake:
everyone is saying this sucks, and I'm thinking
I agree. Three rounds of lag, just for continual
bleeding. Three rounds isn't so great in pking.

Bearcharge:
Ranger bash. Wow.

Wilderness familiarity and snare:
This is all rangers get for their exp penalty,
really. A god dodge in the wildnerness, and an
ability to split up killing people, by snaring
them all. Snare should have twists though, like
poisoning or slowing, or what not. Maybe even
damage when they get snared. Or they fall in a
pit and can't get out unless they can fly or are
with the ranger.

So, let's think this out.

A ranger's experience penalty is because he has
a laging hide only in the forests (which can
now be seen by a race, not just rangers). He can
make you continually bleed (not all it's up to
be, play a dagger spec), bash you (typical giant
stuff), dodge like a god in the forest (yet, can't
dodge spells...), and you can snare people (which
means they don't come out til it wears off, or they
are attacked...hence scrolls/staves is almost all
you have). Oh, and because you can make your own
food and water.

Now, other experience penalty classes:
Assassins, get some nice stuff.
Bards, could rock any ranger and most classes.
Anti-paladin, *cough* Palan? Jarmel?
Paladins, we won't even go into how bad they suck.

Improvement ideas?
Give them more stuff to do before rank 30.
Hell, by then every other class has something
that could kill a ranger, very easily. You have,
what, ambush and pugil?
Then above that, I believe it's 4 skills.

Least the other exp penalty classes have more
spread out powers, and are worth their time at
hero. Notice you hear of hero Anti-paladins,
Assassins, Bards...and Paladins because of
roleplay and the occasional spamming wrath.
Ever hear much of ranger heros? Nope, not really.
I mean, come on, when was the last time a
ranger led Battle. Exactly.
