I'd say offensive transmuter for a relatively inexperienced player. When you run into an area you can't handle, grab a bard or a paladin or something, and you can take almost anything.

For the experienced player, I'd say a conjurer, but the class is a bad choice if you're still learning the game. Until one recent tweak, I could have made it through all 9 circles of Hell solo as a conjurer.

(And obviously, lich is a good choice too :P)
