Take Shadar Logoth. You'll notice that The Arcane didn't say he kills a lot of groups in SL, he kills a lot of groups in Aridhol. One reason, I suspect, is it is a lot easier to check Aridhol than it is SL. Sure this is in part due to the aggro mobs and such, but it's also the maze factor.

Look at the Barovian mists. If you're practicing on ghouls in the forest of barovia and do a where occasionally, you'll almost always see someone trying to sneak up on you. This is because a person can't just spam directions, they have to look.

My largest lack of agreement is your statement that Manor-way to Thalos is a waste of time. It isn't. That maze is essentially 2 mists-of-barovia type mazes, one on the western side and one on the eastern side, with an island of non-maze in the middle. Use look.
