I am not going to comment on the battle in the original post, but at least educate this person posting before.
Transform negates the ability to barrier oneself ... effectively meaning that an empire/master mage has the same effective hp:
A arcane muter in Empire with reasonable gear lets say 1000hp(can get a hell of a lot more, but lets stay low), would effectively get 2000hp by protecting himself with barrier(50% protection).
The master would be able to do the exact same ... or don't use barrier and cast transform, giving him effectively around 2000hp(real hp no protection).
The only instances where the Masters situation is superior in that regard, is if he is newly killed. Since he will still gain around 1000hp. While the Imperial would only double his hp giving him around 500-650.
