As Nepenthe--I think it was--posted a while back,
it's much easier to kill a recently-killed lich
than one that's stayed alive for a good long while.

In many ways, there's a sort of snowball effect
to staying alive as a lich...the longer you do it,
the easier it is to remain that way.

There's also a serious learning curve on liches,
which answers your complaint about "newbies" and liches;
a newbie who was:
a) Somehow able to find all his/her items,
b) Able to roleplay well enough to merit a potion
actually had some chance of success, and
c) Was lucky enough not to die to the potion anyhow

would still get his/her arse handed to him/her.
Because, especially as a new lich, the more you die,
the harder it is to get started on that learning curve.

Like most of the mage classes, liches are not the easiest
thing to get through to learn effectively. Zorsaul, from
what I understand (and I may be mistaken) had a jump on the
learning curve...which is not to say he didn't go through it,
but is to say that Zorszaul didn't suffer for it. That is,
perhaps, vague. But too bad.

Liches are a bit sicker now than they once were...from what
I have seen/know, there are alterations since Istendil's time
that, basically, I don't think Istendil would ever die were
he a lich today.

I would say, there are a few ways I could think of to viably
kill Zorszaul. All but one or two necessitate being in a cabal.
Or getting together a huge group. Perhaps one other way would be
to get any lich...but from what I can tell, Zorszaul regularly
toasts the other lich around.
Oh well. Good luck!
