This is just me writing down thoughts it does not mean i'm unhappy with current system or want my system to be implemented or anything, i'm just sparking thoughts (not necessarily directly related to what i'm talking about)

There are basically 4 stages of learning in an ability (taking driving as an example)

Unconsciously skilled (you can do things very well without thinking about them - but you can develop bad habits - been driving for years)

Consciously skilled (You can do things well but you concentrate on the task at hand - just passed driving test)

Consciously unskilled (you are aware of that which you can't do - a 12yr old and driving a car)

Unconsciously unskilled (you are unaware of what it is you can't do - a 3yr old and driving a car)

Basically i'm wondering about "learning from mistakes" and seeing your skills/spells as %'s...what would people say if instead of the %'s you can rate your learning in them..even to the extent that you don't actually see anything written down as to your current standards in them...

Ok would a rank 51 600 yr old elf mage have 100% in the spell armor if he perfected it about 500 years before and then never cast it again?

How about your practice as you do currently, but your prowess in the ability depends upon how often you use it and when.
ie. why do professionals train all the time..

My idea is that abilities degrade over time with lack of use..
You learn the skill/spell/whatever as usual in your guild and you become better at is by regular use (you don't see %rating) of course if you stop using it you become rusty again and need a little rehearsal to become fully proficient..(envisage elderly mage trying to remember the words for the simple magic spell he learnt in his youth)

For game reasons you wouldn't drop below the minimum ability level that you practiced to (unless special reasons) and getting better at the spells/skills wouldn't be as difficult as it is currently, but this is matched by the fact that abilities can fall as well as rise..
