But in my experience, the real problem is that at that range, there are non-wilderness areas that simply have a larger effort-to-benefit ratio.

Many other areas, even when they do not have an equally high exp per mob value, rate higher in effectivity because it's just faster to rank at, and generally don't need a specific group. And maybe are much safer too.

So, while there are better alternatives, many groups would have to take it slow(er) to accomodate you in the group.

Take for instance Owlbears, unless you have a mage with you, going there will probably get your groupmates killed.

The wastes are a good hunting area, but you have to have groupmates about that aren't too bothered about the cold, or who have means to cancel it's effects. It's maze parts make it sorta annoying to look for prey and/or escape in emergency.

Anyways, some areas that I like as wilderness rank areas:

1-15: Forest of Nowhere (Anything align allows)
8-15: Ysigrath
14-22: Forbidden Forest (Trolls)
20-25: Jade Hills (if align allows)
22-25: Plains of Arendyl
24-28: Drogran Hills
28-33: Frigid Wastelands
30-35: Dranetty Woods

33-40: Kinda hard, could go to Maltrakis, but that's very dangerous with the average group.

40+:
- Maltrakis - 'easier' with a Paladin/Healer in the group.*
- that place north east of Udgaard with Cloud Giants (don't remember the name)*

45+: Mount Calandryl*

* Unless their terrain types have changed since I last was there, but I doubt it.

PS: The ranges are supposed to indicate the level at which you, as a Ranger, can defend there without too much difficulty.
PPS: I'm not an expert, might need to take certain ranges with a grain of salt. Did work for me though.
