I think if your first sleep effort fails they should get a random sleep
Immunity for 4 to 10 hours, unless a trusted person woke them from a sleep within the last 24 hours.

To be honest, if you die to sleep you've probably done something wrong because there are numerous ways to survive it. Feron (on account of being a felar) and tsalantha (on account of high damroll) may be exceptions. But some chars should survive even them.
