The gates of the Palace lie open to the north.  The square itself is made
from the same fused black stone that all of the Imperial roads seem to be
constructed from.  However, here the smooth surface of the road has been
deeply etched to show a huge Symbol of the Imperial Codex.  At each of the
cardinal directions surrounding the Symbol you see smaller representations 
of the individual Sect Symbols.  Each of these details pass quickly, for 
your eye is almost immediately drawn to the black stone cross rising from 
the center of the great Symbol.

Far Above the Imperial Lands
  The air rushing under your wings is cold and crisp, with a slight
crispness indicating the proximity of the mountains to your north.
You slow the flapping of your wings and glide for a moment, to
marvel once again at the view.  No matter how many times you see
it, the view from above the clouds still invokes a childlike
reverence in you.  It is as if the clouds themselves form a
whole new tier of land high above Thera, of rolling white
hills with a few dark thunderheads scattered among them.

below the clouds.  Beneath the clouds lies a straight black
scar cutting through the land from north to south.  You recognize it
as the road built by the fledgling Empire.  The Imperial Road
cuts through the mountains to the north and opens into a wide
mesa.  A great structure stands on the northwestern bank of a
murky river where the black road ends.  A few buildings can be
seen sprouting on the mesa as well. Far to the south, you think you can
make out the small village of Balator on the edge of the
horizon.
