  Sloping walls of loose sand, dirt, rocks and other debris make up each side 
of this sinkhole.  The arid soil tends to crumble at a touch, falling down 
towards the bottom of the pit, but several of the larger rocks are stable 
enough to form a few handholds that can be used to climb out.  A few small 
animal skeletons lying half-buried near the bottom suggest that not all are 
so fortunate as to be able to make use of them.

leaves provide little in the way of shade.  The slope leading down into the
sinkhole seems stable enough to support a careful descent, if nothing else.

little trees that provide little shade to the sun-dried soil.  The soil itself
looks as if it hasn't seen significant rainfall in quite some time.  The
underbrush crackles as you step on the dry foliage that comprises it, and
seems to show very distinctly the passage made both by you and by other
creatures, animal and otherwise.

hundred yards across in some points, and is easily the size of a large village

the way of shade.  The slope leading down into the sinkhole seems stable

Inside a Large Crater 
  Tall broad slopes rise up on all sides forming the edge of this massive 
sinkhole, large enough to be considered more of a crater than anything else.  
The soil of the sides and floor is firm, and has likely been here in this 
shape for some time.  The crater appears to be home to a crude village of 
sorts, as animal skins and bones have been placed in seemingly decorative 
displays.  Here and there, skins and meat have been hung out to be prepared, 
and crude tools lie nearby.  To the north, a large cave has been dug into 
the side of the crater, shored up by crude logs.  To the south the crater 
continues, while you can climb back up out of the crater as well.
