He probably looks at the "who" list and guesses who is going to be forced to retrieve their item, then camps there.

Couple hero battle guys online but no hero scarabs, and a lower level scarab is online? That guy will probably be forced to retrieve.

Maybe he sent a tell to a battle guy and straight up asked if they have the icon. Even if Battle is at war with Outlander, individual may answer truthfully anyway.
