south.  The rise of this slope prevents any further progress to the south,
but there seems to have been an excavation recently, and cart tracks lead north
looking as if there has been something carted in or out of the cave.  Several
broken black stones lie here making a sort of staging area for materials and
trade to be moved either into the cave, or north to the road.

return to the surface.  The chill in the air has become comfortable as the
depth of this particular tunnel is insulated by the warm earth.
