A Trail Leading Away From the Valley 
  You are standing on a small trail on the edge of a forest valley.  The trail 
itself is only a few feet wide, a tiny line of trodden dirt where the grass has 
been beaten down by multiple footsteps.  To either side of you, large northern
pines rise up majestically towards the sky, interspersed with a few deciduous 
trees such as oaks and maples.  Deep within the trees to either side, you can 
sense the watchful eyes of elven scouts upon you, but as soon as you set your 
gaze upon them, they fade back into the trees.  Off towards the west, the sounds
of running water splashing gently against rocks denotes the nearby presence of a
river, though there is no clear path through the dense trees that anyone but the
most experienced elven scout might find.  To the north, the path climbs up into
a pass through a narrow fissure between the mountains ringing the valley, while
to the south, the path broadens and appears to intersect with a much larger
pathway.  On one of the nearby trees, a small sign has been posted.
