The Ruined Gates of Maethien
  A wall of thick mists hovers at the southern edge of a crumbling wall, 
the shadowy forms of dark trees merely thin outlines in the gloom. Overhead
a once massive arch of stone has crumbled and fallen, large pieces of stone
littering the ground in the space between gates. One massive gate has fallen
from its mountings, half tilted against the side of the arch, the other half
cracked and lying in the dirt.  Rising beyond the northern edge of the ruined
arch, an enormous sphere of crackling black energy is visible beyond the
remains of several buildings.  Engulfing a large section of a sky laden with
thick black clouds and hiding whatever lies beneath, the sphere dominates
your view.

A Junction of Paths
  Before a fallen arch in the towering wall three small overgrown paths meet
from the east, west and north. To the south, beyond the clutter of stone from
the fallen arch, a wall of thick mists hide whatever lies beyond the gates.
To both the east and west two paths pass along the base of the crumbling wall
to the sharp turns where they travel beyond your sight. The last path travels
north between two collapsing stone structures, towards the wall of crackling
blackness that forms a massive sphere reaching high into the dark sky.

Before a Wall of Darkness
  Withered grass grows from both edges of the small path, extending out to both
the east and west, beyond large domelike buildings that have begun to crumble
into ruin. To the south, just beyond a meeting of paths, a massive archway is
set into a towering wall from which a thick mist creeps. Just before you to
the north, a wall of utter darkness rises into the dark sky, its arcing form
disappearing out of sight upwards, and both to the east and west. A small area
of the wall before you wavers slightly and dim shapes can be seen beyond.

  A slab of dark stone lies corroded and cracked, a fine layer of gray ash on
its surface failing to hide the deep claw marks everywhere. The marks look to
have been an attempt to obliterate thin grooves etched into the stone, their
faint lines all but gone. In the darkness that surrounds you it is extremely
difficult to be certain, but the grooves look to have once formed a large
circle with thin runes contained within. Along the southern edge of the stone,
a wall of tangible darkness rises, the power of it felt from paces away. In
the surface of the wall a slight wavering is present, looking just a little
lighter than the rest.

A Collapsed Dome
  Little more than a wide ring of jagged stone remains of the dome. Large slabs
of the dull stone lie both inside and outside the ring, all equally destroyed by
the heavy gouges that run through their surface. Over every surface a layer of
fine ash settles, every movement you make sending up clouds into a gray curtain
swirling through the darkness. A wide even break in the southern remains of the
wall reveal a narrow path just beyond the ruins.

  A narrow path covered by swirling ash and thick sludge passes along the base
of a wall that collapses into ruin. Thick slabs of stone have broken free from
the wall to lie in the ashen remains of the life that was once here. All about
you an impenetrable darkness rushes to meet you, carrying with it a foul chill
that turns your stomach. The remains of the wall turn to run south and west in
jagged spires, the way south blocked by a pile of rubble that has fallen across
the path. From the center of the pile rises a shimmering curtain of crackling
black energy that hides anything that might lie beyond it.

across your flesh. Dim shapes surround you, little more than faint outlines in
the gloom. To the north piles of jagged rubble surrounds the curving walls of
what once may have been a large dome. Opposite, to the south, the collapsing 
remains of a towering wall spill down upon the path at its base. The path is
covered in swirling ash and thick sludge, the remains of what life once grew
along its edge.

is choked with a coating of thick gray sludge dusted with fine gray ash that 
hangs in the chill air. Both to the east and south the path is swallowed into

carved. The space between is somehow even darker then the gloom that surrounds
you, making the blackened stone of the mountain appear light in comparison.

  Along the base of a mountain a narrow path of small twists and turns follows
its contours. Fine gray ash floats through the chill darkness, covering every
surface you are able to see in a dull coat that flies back into the air at the
slightest movement. The narrow path broadens slightly as it makes a lazy turn 
to the east and south, to mirror the mountain's own change of direction,
shortly after once again shrinking to just enough room for one traveler.

  A narrow path of gray ash follows the base of a jagged mountain as it turns
sharply to the north and west, vanishing from sight as it is swallowed by the
surrounding darkness. Off the eastern edge of the path heaps of dull stone 
and rotted timbers rise from the ashes, the debris impossible to move around
or over. A large archway of heavily corroded and scarred stone opens onto the

rotted and shattered visible in the mass. Over everything a layer of fine gray
ash has settled, kicked up into the air at the slightest movement. Surrounded 
by a foreboding darkness, the path moves on to the north and south, vanishing

slightest movement. The narrow path broadens slightly as it makes a lazy turn 
to the east and south, to mirror the mountain's own change of direction,
shortly after once again shrinking to just enough room for one traveler.
