The Beginning of a Winding Path
  Tall steppe grasses cover the southern expanse of the endless desert as
the red sands of Araile begin shading into the uneven ochres of dry
scrubland. To the south, tall basalt fingers of rock stretch toward
the sky, so elemental in their naked verticality they seem almost
alive, as if they had been pushed silently out of the earth's crust
barely moments ago. The well-trodden path meandering around the
megaliths provide relative safety from the trackless emptiness around
you, for they are the only visible pedestrian markers within the
sprawling steppe lands. Far to the east, a strangely beautiful creature
is glimpsed running swiftly southward into the steppes, but it is
impossible to ascertain what it is from this distance. A smooth
granite stele has been planted firmly in the desert loam by your feet.

Wandering in the Desert
  Deep red sands swirl around pale yellow boulders. Huge tan dunes
and shallow valleys seem never ending as you walk through the shifting
sands that seem to mark this vast desert. You are almost overwhelmed as
you look around you, it is as if the desert itself was trying to remind
you of how insignificant you really are. The land seems somehow
majestic and peaceful, at the same time it is cruel and violent.

  This gravel and packed dirt road leads along the edge of the Khalid River,
a steep grade of tiered stones leading down to the water.  A bridge to the
north leads over the river and deeper into the city.  The road comes to an
abrupt end to the west, where a gate of iron and stone serves as entrance
to a large graveyard.  A steady flow of nomads and traders pass between the
Sultan's soldiers at the gate to the south.

enlightenment.  Their voices soar over the crowds like frantic birds only
to land on the battlements to the west or to circle around the porticos of
the Great Temple that looms up from the east.  The avenue leads south to
the steps of the Temple and north towards the Beautiful Gate and the
Sultan's grand palace.

the crowds that roam the streets here.  His voice (surprisingly enough)
booms above the chanting and prayers of the other holy men and women that
gather outside the Temple.  Filling your head with visions of pain, suffering,
and the climax of dismay that will bring the Dead God back to rule the world
with his chosen people he begins to bring you down as well.
The Prophet of Doom is in perfect health.

Inside the Gate of Sihaam
  A stone lion's head with a bundle of arrows in its powerful maw gazes
down at those that leave the city through the Gate of Arrows.  Twin towers
flank the gate, with archers and heavily armored soldiers manning the
portal to the desert of the south.  Small stone and wood dwellings butt
up against the city's southern wall.  The street inside the gate leads
north towards the heart of the city.  Outside a road leads into the desert
sands.  Nomad merchants and traders come and go beneath the surveillance
of the Sultan's guards.

desert wilderness.  To the north a road leads deeper into the city.  The
towering structures of the Great Temple rise from the crowded streets to the
northwest.

  Running parallel to the river that passes through the city, this little
road carries the spillover foot traffic and small carts that come and go from 
the market to the northeast.  Buildings of wood and clay line the street, 
wooden balconies overlooking the tides of trade below.  To the south, between 
a pair of merchant homes a wide bridge leads over the Khalid to the southern 
bank, where the homes are smaller and less tended-to.

future harvests reaped for present sins, the crippled hobble about searching
for salvation, and the unholy jeer at the priests and devotees with an 
endless stream of derision.  Tents and tables are constructed around the
temple walls and narrow doorways lead into the countless shrines to lesser
gods and angels that have burrowed their way into the edges of the Temple
proper.  South of the road, through the tents and displays, the banks of
the Khalid River lead down to the dark and swirling waters.

  Here at the foot of the Great Temple, the devoted mingle in a confused 
mass of solemnity and frenzy, preaching, dictating, and gazing at passers-by
with imploring eyes.  Shrines and beaded alcoves gather at the base of the
Temple's outer walls, dedicated to every minor god and demon that has ever
taken interest in the lives of mortal man.  Banners with apocalyptic 
proclamations hang above the milling crowds, tired and faded streamers
brushing the heads of those that pass underneath.

Intersection of the Avenue of Abedim and North Khalid Road 
  A corner shrine stands above the murmuring crowds of the devout, the lost,
and the searching, a huge painting of a many-armed devil straddling the
doorway, lost souls clutched in every hand.  Oddly enough, the painting fits 
into the carnival like atmosphere of the people gathering around the Great 
Temple.  When not huddled inside in quiet prayer, they are out in these 
streets, electric and mad, with a wild-eyed purpose.  Across from the stands 
and displays of religious icons, prayer wheels, beads, oils, lotions, trinkets,
charms, pendants and painted boxes stand crowded buildings with homes upon 
homes, children and the elderly gazing down from precarious wooden landings to
watch the people below.

The Butchery 
  Across the walls of the shop hang fresh cuts of meat, catch pans along the 
floor gathering the oozing blood dripping from the merchandise.  Beyond a 
battered curtain of beads at the back of the shop lies the slaughter room.  A 
heavy chunk of flesh lies on the chopping block next to the counter, ready for 
the butcher's handiwork.  The cries of animals in the midst of death at the 
hands of the butcher's assistants occasionally pierce the drone of the crowds 
outside.

within this temple proves your initial thought to have been a misconception.
It is a vast hut, set before stone.  In the corners you can see where the
wooden walls give way to carved rock.  To the east and west of you, small
tunnels head off into darkness.  A large ramp veers to the south towards an
altar and an open pit.  Unlike many other places in this village, this place
was carefully constructed, and is well attended to.  Low chants can be heard
from deeper within.

The Palisade Gate 
  Mud-ridden tracks lead you to the gate of this weatherworn palisade.
The large barricade appears poorly constructed, comprised of large sharpened
tree trunks cast together with thick rope.  Upon the gate, a large cattle
skull decorated with feathers and a torn crimson war banner rests, serving as
the standard for a brutal tribe of warriors behind these decaying gates.
You can see an eerie haze of fog rising from behind the structure, along with
the harsh sounds of village life.  Carved along the face of a timber which
serves as part of this construct are small words written in an odd language.
The tall wooden palisade stretches further to the north and south while the
trodden path continues eastward through the gates.

A Grisly Path of Carnage 
  Drifting in the wind are large banners that display the scene of war and
the brutal lifestyle of the tribesmen that inhabit the palisade to the east.
Upon the ground are skeletal remains of creatures that dwell in this mountain
range.  Some are the lions and goats that roam these hills others the dwarven
skullcaps from the nearby village of Akan.  Posted on rotted spears are tufts
of scalp and heads of slain foes, many of which have rotted to reveal the
skeletal face of vanquished foes.  Large timbers lay upon the ground, used
to continue the construction of this poorly made palisade.  Thrown against
the edge of the stack of timbers is the broken form of an elven ranger,
brutally beaten and torn apart.  It is obvious that the creatures who did
this have little regard for life.

  You come to a ridge along this mountainside.  The ground flattens out here
and becomes slightly weatherworn and broken in.  Loose rubble mills the

unbathed filth to mingle in the air.  A filthy bestial hide lays in a
stain of blood along the ground and the broken shaft of a spear is strewn
along the floor.  It appears as if this range of mountains is inhabited
after all.

with help from the divine.  Small engravings and inscriptions carved in the
most exquisite manner cover the altar.  This is where the villagers come to
give thanks for the rock and pray for their brethren at Mortorn.  You can
leave the altar to the north, or enter the Academy down.

mountain, so large is the temple.  A huge dome stretching above you glows
with a holy light, and arches are in every direction.  The guild of healers
is the west and the guild of shamans is east.  You can leave the Temple of
the Holy to the north, or worship at the altar to the south.  A grand set
of stairs leads down.

  The beautiful crafted stairway descends into a broad chamber.  Forged
mithril sconces hold brilliantly flickering torches that set the room

crafted engravings of ancient dwarven heroes and figures of myth.  A
huge carved wooden doorway hinged with gold and platinum bindings lies
to the east. A small door of simple oak marked with the symbol of a scepter 
and tome can be seen to the north.  A door of maple marked with the symbol of 
an ornate axe and mace can be seen to the south.

The Barracks 
  Numerous hides mark the resting places of the orcish army.  Scratches in
the floor sketch out lewd drawings that a few orcs have created to entertain 
themselves.  This entire section is filthy, yet strangely comfortable, and 
probably one of the best places to rest in these barracks.
 
[Exits: north south west]
An orc brute screams wildly, trying to intimidate the other orcs.
Chooltog the Rabid squats here, preparing goblins for battle.
The chief's lieutenant stands here keeping an eye out for trouble.
