  The smell of smoke still seems to linger in the air as you make your way
through what once was the dwarf forest.  Where stunted trees once stood
now stands a wide road made of packed dirt and trampled rock.  Booted
feet seem to have passed this area, the feet of seasoned warriors and
barbaric men.  Placed on bloodied pikes are the heads of butchered men,
mostly in the attire of rangers.  Yet along the ground there are remains
of slain barbarians, their pelts and weapons discarded along the side of
the road.  To the west the road continues to the ruins of Ostalagiah and
to the east the road meets a junction.

A Broken Trail Through the Dwarf Forest 
  Splitting and winding from left to right, this trail appears to have been 
created by ferocious trampling.  The ground is marked with large, booted 
prints and the stunted trees on either side of this trail are split and
cracked as if roughly abused in passing.  Were it not for the woodland
activity, you might think that there was some form of danger nearby, still
there is reason to believe something or someone massive has caused this
destruction in the forest.  You can continue along the trail to the south
or head toward an opening to your north.

An Opening in the Stone Road 
  Before you is a vast forest that extends to the far reaches of the south.  
In the gloom, it almost appears to be impenetrable, however you see small
shafts of light that peak through the canopy of leaves above your head. 
A great road has been crafted here, large flat stones make up the face
of the road that winds its way through the canopy of trees here.   An 
array of stagnant air fill the gloom and you almost feel as if this 
may contribute to the cause of the stunted growth of these trees.  You
can turn back north, toward a worn road or continue south toward the gloom
of the forest.

A Large Crossroads 
  Constructed of great slabs of closely fitted stone, the Eastern Road
intersects two decidedly different roads here.  To the north is a shady
lane that slopes slightly upwards as it transforms itself into Bramblefield
Road.  Constructed of a multitude of flat stones, the wide road to the
south runs through a sparse forest of twisted and stunted trees.  Both
the western and eastern segments run straight as a bow shot towards the
horizon, dividing the dwarf forest to the south from the cultivated fields
and pastures to the north.  A few wagons and carts are visible in a dusty
clearing just off the road to the southwest.

     A sign points north towards Voralian City and south to the Dwarven Forest.
     Sunk into the center of the crossroads is a worn, steel marker.

  Here begins what appears to be a mass grave.  The dead and diseased seem
to have been piled further north of here, in an opening as wide as a small
clearing.  The foul smell that comes from the north is rancid and steals
away any of your remaining senses.  Nothing save the feasting rats and 
dripping of moist sewage can be heard.  You can continue north, or return
to the street to your south.

earth.  Skeletal remains are all that have survived the wars that have
ruined this city.  Chains where enslaved servants were held hostage,
now sit in ruins.  A multitude of cracks serve as a spider-web against
the wall, though the work of dwarven masonry still serves to be an
awe-inspiring view.

The Ruined Streets of Anguish 
  There is a lack of wood around these buildings, and most of these walls
serve as great masses of stone that are now cracked and broken by both
time and war.  Great spires now lie in ruin, crumbling to the ground
where stone bases now reside.  Ash and soot mark the face of most of
this stone, a torn battering ram now lays on its side, the wood charred
and bent beyond recognition.  Great portions of foliage and woodland growth
have penetrated the walls, allowing for the woods to begin growing, drowning
what was once a civilization of giants.  Based on the blood and crimson
stains that are set in these stones, you are quite sure these streets are
aptly named.

The Ruined Streets of Anguish 
  There is a lack of wood around these buildings, and most of these walls
serve as great masses of stone that are now cracked and broken by both
time and war.  Great spires now lay in ruins, crumbling down to the ground
where stone bases now reside.  Ash and soot mark the face of most of
this stone, a torn battering ram now lays on its side, the wood charred
and bent beyond recognition.  Great portions of foliage and woodland growth
have penetrated the walls, allowing for the woods to begin growing, drowning
what was once a civilization of giants.  Based on the blood and crimson
stains that are set in these stones, you are quite sure these streets are
aptly named.

The Gates to the Streets of Anguish 
  Great gates of iron mark the entrance to the city streets.  This is
the flank end of the ruins, where the merchants and often allies of
these looming giants enter the city streets in comfort.  Guards walk 
the ramparts and you can easily note the glares you get upon entering.
There is a lack of wood on these buildings, much of which are solid stone
that make the foundation of this stronghold.  Great spires reach into
the air toward the east, shadowing you as well as most of this narrow
street.  You note the sounds of pain that come from further along
the street.  There are also cries of hatred and anger that come from 
some of the nearby shops and alleys.  These streets were aptly named,
as anguish seems to be the only emotion in the air.

The Outskirts of Ostalagiah 
  Here lay the outskirts of the citadel of Ostalagiah.  Broken ramparts run
along the ends of the city walls, forming an impenetrable barrier of stone.
Ruined flags regarding the once superiority of the city of giants, hang in
defeat as a cold breeze stirs around the ramparts.  Small patches of grass
attempt to grow from the cold earth, seeking any form of sunlight that might
breach the dark clouds that loom over these walls.  You remain close enough
to the walls that you can smell the stench that fills the streets within.

A Secluded Forest Trail 
  Here the trail appears to be less dense.  Large trees form a small canopy of 
shelter from the harsh environment that dwells outside of this forest.  The
ground has small patches of grass and moss, most of which has been trampled
in its attempt to grow on this traversed ground.  Dead leaves, both brown and
orange litter the path here, as if fall is an eternal season this far south.
You can continue along the path further south and to the north.

A small turn toward the south and west is here in the forest.  Squirrels leap
from the trees and scurry past you, in hopes of gaining some nuts in their 
passage.  You can continue along the trail to the south and to the west.

You are impaled on the sharp spikes at the bottom of the pit!
