The Southern Market Square 
  Pushing your way through the bartering farmers and the mercenary-flanked 
merchants you struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the stench and flood 
of voices of those around you.  The stones of the street beneath you grow 
slick with spilt beer and animal dung and it is an effort just to stay 
standing.  To the north a grand fountain bursts up and away from the clutches 
of the milling crowds.  To the south the masses spill out into a wide street 
leading away from the Square.  Between the fountain and the road to the south
a massive stone base--sunk into the paving stones--has been put into place for
a future statue.

the northeast you spy the dome of the Great Temple, peeking through roof tiles

The Southwestern Market Square 
  Traders and holy men, travelers and beggars, gossips and fakirs--the masses 
of the desert's lone commercial hub push and shove their way through the 
frantic haggling and seductive promises of those that have come here to buy 
and sell.  From the south the scent of fresh-baked goods drifts into the crowds
and is lost.  To the west the crippled, the holy, the wounded--all come and go 
beneath the pillars of the Great Temple.  The towers and domes of the Great 
Temple rise up like a titan resting beside the chaos of the market.  At the 
corner of the Square a pillar rises to display a monstrous sandstone lion, 
reclining in regal might.

Eastern Steps of the Great Temple 
  Each step that leads up to the Great Temple is seven spans across, wide
enough for the Sultan's infantry units to march up and into the holy chambers
beyond.  Gigantic earthen vessels line the steps, matched pairs burning
blessed sage and scented woods and sending sweet-smelling smoke towards the
heavens.  At the top of the steps tower caryatid columns, each maiden veiled
and bearing a curved sword.  An arched frame carved with the Saints of the
First Age is balanced on their heads and serves as a stage for the dome of 
colored glass that lies up and over the painted statues above.  To the east
lies the crowded city market.

The Great Temple of Hamsah Mu'tazz 
  Here on the main floor of the Great Temple, the crepuscular light that
filters down through the upper arches beneath the dome of colored glass and
the delicate stone images of the Theran gods illuminates the painted tiles
that adorn the consecrated walk around the Temple perimeter.  An alcove of
lit candles burns to the west, where prayers to the Gods of the Morning hang 
from beaded cords like a suspended liturgical library.  Archways lead north 
and south through the Temple proper.  To the east a flight of long stone steps
leads down to the chaos of the city's market.

Great Temple of Hamsah Mu'tazz, Hall of Enlightenment 
  The Sultan's city is not only a center of religious zeal, but also of
learning.  Beside the tiled walk that leads the devout through the ground
floor of the Great Temple sit the prayer rugs of those that meditate before
the hallowed shrines of learning, enlightenment, and revelation.  Scholars
and priests alike gather here as do the hopeless, the lost, and those in need 
of understanding.  The twilight light from above filters down onto those that 
prostrate themselves among these blessed shrines, illuminating them with an 
unworldly glow.  The walk leads north and west of here.

Great Temple of Hamsah Mu'tazz 
  This quiet arcade is overseen by an expansive bas-relief of the first
seven Sultans of the city, each portrayed smaller than the First, despite the 
fierce pride displayed by the entire group.  A tray of candles is spread 
beneath the stillness of the stone figures, many of which are lit in offering 
to the spirits of greatness passed.  Priests and mystics gather at the edges 
of the tiled walk that leads through the temple, discussing works of faith, 
debating the differences between warring religions, and discussing news from 
abroad.

The High Altar of the Great Temple 
  Here at the heart of the Great Temple, a wide circular dais mirrors the
sweeping curves of the dome of colored glass high above.  Large enough to
hold a hundred or so of the devoted around its perimeter, five coal pits form 
a glowing ring around the altar to the desert city's pantheon of deities, 
separating the blessed from the profane.  Large urns of smoked glass and
darkened iron serve as receptacles for donations to the Temple and the city's
unfortunate.  To the north and south a few steps lead down to the lowest
floor of the Temple.
