No matter how much you try to explain yourself, getting caught red handed results in learning a hard lesson.
You chose to not accept a slap on the wrist slaying (I would have banned you) and tryed to explain why you were cheating.

Seriously though, what your describing is them knowing your cheating and you pretending its not true.
If this was a case of imm mistake, I would be shocked. I have never had a experiance where an imm thought something was B.S. that wasn't. I have had some some things look shakey too, simply by chance and the imm's were always cool just pointing it out in subtle ways that could be explained.
