What should the Imperials have done to avoid a gank?

They raided against what appeared to be equal number of defenders.

When the defenders can in singly, what should the Imperials have done? Engaged one vs one until all four defenders arrived?

Sorry, but if you go to raid against equal numbers, you kill whomever you see whenever you see them.
